A Welcome Surprise

Image
After a Bad Day...  . ..At the office. But to backtrack a little, I had decamped to Godrevy in west Cornwall surrounded as it is by sand dunes and a nature reserve with the  Iconic lighthouse just offshore. Another blowy day in January was playing out, just after one of the many storms we have experienced this autumn and winter. So, no change there then. But I had my (probably not very) trusty Bronica ETRS Medium Format camera with colour film loaded in one back and black and white in the other. So what could possibly go wrong? Well, lots as it happens, both during and after the shoot. My composition skills were I think working ok, but the wind was playing havoc with my tripod's stability which meant that some images had less than optimal sharpness and my metering game was not on point either. The monochromes then suffered from inconsistent developing probably caused by me not securing the film's reel properly in the tank. This left the colour which I sent away to Analog...

Why you should quit social media:

Image
Fed up with Farcebook (sic) Irritated by Instagram, or tortured by TikTok. Well you've come to the right place... here on this Blog of course, but if you want further reasons why social media has become a toxic place, just watch this video (I know, some people class YT as social media, but I don't) Bryan Birks is one of my favourite analog photographers working mainly in large format in the USA. He has a caustic sense of humour, but this short video created whilst he prepares for an exhibition of his work is right on point as to why we should veer away from these ways of displaying our art. Watch and I recommend you subscribe. 👍

Linking the Past to the Present

Image
Going way, way back and then forward again to today are these two images linked by being shot in the same Garden 23 years apart. And why can I say that? Because I had the foresight to populate the metadata fields of Title and Description for this first image. Iris siberica at Hemingford in 2003 It was taken at the end of May, the 29th as it happens, permanently etched into my D100 camera's EXIF metadata. That location was exactly the same as that I visited today with my partner of 16 years and my now 92 year old Mother. As a seasoned gardener and garden visitor, it is highly likely we had gone together on that May day, but she had no recall and mine was faint. Hemingford Manor Today Nonetheless, I knew I had been to Hemingford Grey in Cambridgeshire and had taken photos there of Irises and although, in winter, Hemingford Manor garden looked very different, they still had beds flanking the main paths with the names of varieties and despite the chilly winter weather there were stil...

Kennall Vale Shoot Preview

Image
A week ago, I took the Intrepid 4*5 out to Kennall Vale in search of moss, tree trunks and boulders. And as the accompanying Magic Viewfinder preview shows, I found them despite the surrounding carnage caused by storm Goretta. More on this shoot in another post.👍 Kennall Vale Preview
